Voice over IP telephony - Fritz!Box FON WLAN 7050

Since june 2005 the Elsinga family can not only be contacted by normal phone or e-mail, but also by VoIP. We replaced our Alcatel Speedtouch 510i ADSL router with a Fritz!Box FON WLAN 7050. This german DSL router is a high-tech communications router, which not only connects to our ADSL line but also to our ISDN telephone line and Siemens Gigaset 4075 wireless ISDN exchange.

The 7050 connects to the internet, to our existing ISDN telephone line and to our ISDN telephones. In integrates VoIP into our existing ISDN fixed telephone line, so we can place/answer VoIP calls with our normal telephone handsets just like "normal" telephone calls. It also has dialing rules, so some calls get routed via VoIP automatically and others use a specific Call-by-Call prefix. Using VoIP does not require any knowledge for the normal telephone user that way. =8-) And, since VoIP accounts can be set up for free on many occasions, we don't have to pay for incoming calls or VoIP calls. Only outgoing calls can be billable, but some providers offer free calls to certain destinations or calls for only 1 eurocent per call.

With 15 VoIP accounts, we can be called from many VoIP registrars. Over 10 of our accounts also have a "normal" dial-in number attached to them, so calling us with a normal phone on our VoIP accounts is also possible. Since those dial-in numbers are in different countries, people can call the number with the lowest cost. There are numbers that cost the same as a local call, such as our german or UK numbers. See our Contact page for details on the specific numbers.

The Elsinga family can now be called on telephone numbers in the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. Since most ISDN telephones only can use 10 MSN's and the Fritz!Box 7050 can only handle 10 VoIP accounts, about half of the VoIP accounts are consolidated into one account at www.sipsnip.com. SipSnip connects to those accounts for us and relays any incoming or outgoing calls for us, for free! It can also do Least Cost Routing, but since the 7050 also has dialing rules for that we don't use that SipSnip feature.

As a service to other callers, most of our fixed telephone numbers are listed at the (alternative) www.e164.org ENUM register, so ENUM enabled devices (like the 7050) will call my fixed telephone numbers via a VoIP account for free. Non-ENUM enabled devices (like ordinary phones) will just call the fixed telephone number.
